Employee Spotlight: Bernard Doherty, Surveyor

Bernard Doherty, Surveyor at Ductbusters

Every person in our organisation plays a vital role in contributing to our success and making Ductbusters great – from our meticulous accounts team, bubbly business development department to our hardworking engineers!

The number of long serving-employees we have working in our organisation is a testament to the family environment we strive to provide – we want everyone to feel like a valued member of the team with the opportunity to develop in their career.

Our employee spotlight this month focuses on Bernard Doherty, a surveyor that has been working at Ductbusters for over 20 years! Bernard’s career has undoubtedly been successful – he achieved the biggest promotion of all in 2014 when he married Tina, after meeting her at Ductbusters.

We caught Bernard for a few moments last week to ask him several questions about his career and experience in working for Ductbusters.

How did you get into surveying?
I worked as a ductwork fitter for AVD which I started in 1983 until 1996, installing ductwork. I met Dermott (our CEO) at AVD when he was a site manager, running all the jobs at the time. In 1996 Dermott started Ductbusters and took me with him – I started as a ductwork cleaner and then was bought into the office as a surveyor in 2004.

Talk us through a typical working day at Ductbusters
It’s always busy here at Ductbusters, which is a good thing! Each day is never the same. I meet a variety of different clients every day – from corner shop owners to site managers in big NHS hospitals!

My day-to-day job is to meet the clients (generally on site) to survey anything from ductwork to AHU’s, to measure and determine the client’s requirements. I then complete a survey sheet on my iPad, which allows our quoting department to issue a quote quickly to the customer.

Has the industry changed much over the years?
Yes, very much so. When I started, there was only a handful of companies that specialised in our sort of work, but today there is lots more competition and a lot more accreditations required which customers are very aware of. We are always striving to achieve as many of the accreditations as possible.

Where’s the most memorable place you’ve worked over the past twenty years with Ductbusters?
It’s got to be 10 Downing Street where we completed a risk assessment on their ventilation systems. We have also quoted for Buckingham Palace, Clarence House & Windsor Castle!! We have also carried out works at Manchester United Football Club.
